What Is Pilates?

Developed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is an exercise system which focuses on improving strength, flexibility, balance, control and muscular symmetry. The rhythmic exercises aid in building more defined, longer, leaner muscles. Pilates is a total body workout of specifically developed exercises done on either a mat or specially designed equipment.  At Core Essentials Pilates Studio we offer equipment based Pilates.  While doing Pilates, the core muscles are what initiate all of the body’s movement.  Each exercise is done with attention to breath, control, and flow of movement while keeping your body in correct alignment to better benefit from the workout.  Pilates exercises concentrate more on the smaller muscle groups around the joints and bones.  After an hours workout you will feel as if you have better posture, more flexibility, core strength, a greater sense of well being, and be on your way to a toner, leaner body.

Who Can Benefit From Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise regimen that everyone can benefit from. Young to older men and women, the weak, those with chronic pain such as; back , neck, arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, etc…, those with posture issues such as scoliosis, and athletes of golf, swimming, tennis, baseball, track, football, etc….Every exercise is only taken to your personal limit of control and can be  modified if need be.  Pilates principles can be used in everyday life such as; mowing the lawn, gardening, shoveling, sweeping, lifting, walking, etc…  Pilates principles are something that everyone should be taught in order to live a long healthy pain free life. Pilates is very versatile and can fit anyone’s needs.

Why Do I Need To Do the Beginners Package?

Even if you have taken mat or equipment classes elsewhere, it is a valuable experience to re-examine your strengths and weaknesses and learn your body’s habits in alignment in movement. Further, by working privately with an instructor, you will learn how to get the most out of your Pilates Group sessions.  If the instructor feels you are competent enough to go into groups within a session or two, we will shorten your series and credit your account.

What Happens During the Initial Beginners Package?

During your five private initial sessions, you will learn the fundamental movement principles of Pilates and the breathing technique we use at Core Essentials Pilates Studio. The goal is for you to experience a wide variety of exercises on the various Pilates equipment and for you to be familiar with the Pilates vocabulary, both in your mind and your body. This way, when you choose to enter into Group Classes, you will see faster results and be able to more thoroughly enjoy your sessions.

 What Should I Wear?

It is helpful for our instructors if you wear comfortable yet form-fitting exercise clothes. That way we can make sure you are performing the exercises in the proper alignment. However, we don’t advise you wear loose or “short” shorts as many of the exercises are done with your legs open and elevated. You may exercise in either your bare feet or socks.

How Many Times Per Week Should I Do Pilates?

Pilates can be quite effective over time even if you can only do one session a week, but most of our clients come 2 to 3 times a week. However, you can do Pilates every single day. There is no “day on, day off” schedule. So if you are training for a special event or have a flexible schedule, you can do Pilates three, four even five times a week.

How Quickly Will I See Results?

Joseph Pilates said that “you’ll feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 and have a whole new body in 30 sessions.”   Most of our clients have found this to be true and many start seeing results within a few sessions.  Keep in mind that every ones bodies are different and results can vary depending on your body type. Perhaps most important, our clients feel better almost instantly which keeps them coming back for more.

Do Men Benefit From Pilates?

Remember: Pilates was created by a man and was later adapted for women! Men generally have less flexibility and a greater degree of upper body strength than women so Pilates helps to create longer, more agile muscles as well as to counter-strengthen in the core and lower body. At Core Essentials Pilates Studio, our male clientele is fast growing. From men who want to improve their golf game, to men recovering from injuries or punishing exercise habits, Pilates helps both men and women retrain and re-strengthen the body for optimum performance.

“I really appreciated Krista’s Pilates instruction during my recent pregnancy.  Throughout each stage, Krista helped me to modify moves to accommodate my growing belly and pushed me just enough so that I maintained strength and muscle tone throughout the nine months.  When I got to the delivery room, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the deep breathing I had been doing in my Pilates exercises relaxed me and helped me to engage with the process of birth more than the other breathing techniques I had learned.”

“I enjoy many sports, and wanted an exercise program to increase my strength and flexibility.  With Pilates, the results have been fantastic, my flexibility at 49 is better than it’s ever been – Pilates is a rewarding challenge.”
